what an SPH caption is.

a caption pairs an image with a short line that does the teasing. the image is usually a dick pic, a woman laughing, or two of them side by side; the line tells the viewer what to think of it. the format grew up on tumblr, lives on in reddit’s caption communities, and is still how a lot of creators sell small penis humiliation in a single look.

it works because it’s fast. a clip takes ten minutes; a caption lands in one second. that’s also why it’s hard to do well: there’s room for one idea, and if the line explains itself, it’s dead.

how to write your own SPH captions.

1. 1. start with the picture. the line should answer what the image shows: a ruler, a laugh, a bigger one beside it. a caption that would fit any picture fits none.
2. 2. one idea, under fifteen words. the best lines read in a single glance. cut the setup if the image already gives it.
3. 3. talk to the viewer. “you” lands harder than “he”. the viewer is the one being teased; write it that way.
4. 4. never explain the joke. end on the sting. “It’s not small. It’s travel size.” needs nothing after it.
5. 5. make it readable. white bold type with a dark outline, or a black bar above the image. keep the text off the subject, and big enough to read on a phone.
6. 6. only use pictures you may use. your own, or ones sent to you for captioning. never someone’s pic without their yes, and no faces unless they asked for it.
